Year-round homeschooling is so important to our family! Many families take the summer off and follow the traditional school schedule. I’m not here to tell you which way is right or wrong. I’m just here to share why year-round homeschooling works for us! Did you know that some states have their school systems running year-round? Also, some other states have a significantly shorter summer break.
Why would anyone want to keep going with school throughout the summer? Whether or not a family homeschools there are SO many reasons! There are obvious benefits for those who do not homeschool; childcare challenges being at the front of those. For those of us who are able to homeschool, doing it year-round can be a beautiful thing!
Why we homeschool year-round

Here’s why we do it! Year-round homeschooling has many benefits. We can keep our slow and steady pace and take the time to meet each child where they are with different subjects. We can spend more time on something we enjoy, with less pressure to get it all done by May. I don’t know about you, but I struggle to fit all of the subjects in during the, “normal,” school year, and art and music often take a back seat. Summer lights us all up! From the crickets and frogs, to the fire flies and flowers, we find inspiration! As soon as the weather warms up and the sun shines brighter in the clear blue skies, we get inspired. I know I do anyway! Summer for us is a time to lean in. We keep reading, writing, and doing math throughout the summer. Summer also gives us an opportunity to lean into music and art more. We enjoy more time outside, getting close to nature, except for the bugs if you’re my 6 year old. We take time to slow down, enjoy the season and keep learning.
Maintaining momentum and encouraging life long learning is one of our biggest reasons for homeschooling year-round. My kids have learned that learning doesn’t exist only in certain times of year, in certain spaces, or even on certain days. Learning is a life-long journey and an every day adventure! Learning is a positive and exciting experience that takes many different shapes! Maintaining momentum allows us to keep track of where they all are more easily too. There is no summer slump! Review happens naturally instead of cramming it all into the first few weeks of Fall. Knowledge is used on-going and so, it’s better retained.

Summer Resources are Great for Year-Round Homeschooling!

Our area has great Summer resources! Our local library’s Summer Reading Program is so fun! They couple reading with challenges, games, fun presentations, and a a gentle encouragement of reading. This is something we look forward to every year! We also have a beautiful nature center nearby, mountains, rivers, fields, parks and ponds. Summer offers so many wonderful resources for us to take advantage of. From increased opportunities for physical activity outside, working together in the garden, running through the sprinkler, and days at the pool we can find learning anywhere in the Summer!
